Wave-particle duality for a single photon: Bohr's complementarity brought to light
Since the early days of quantum mechanics, interference between spatially separated trajectories of a single particle has not ceased to fascinate physicists. I will present a realization in optics of that GedankenExperiment, which is based on a true single photon source. It has allowed us to illustrate the concept of wave particle duality, a striking example of Bohr's complementarity. It has even been possible to implement the famous "Wheeler's delayed choice experiment", emphasizing the fact that Bohr's complementarity should not be understood too naively.

Alain Aspect is Augustin Fresnel Professor at l'Institut d'Optique, École Polytechnique in Palaiseau south of Paris. He became internationally known in the 1980s for a series of experiments addressing the famous controversy between Albert Einstein and Niels Bohr concerning the view of quantum mechanics. The experimental results demonstrate very convincingly a violation of the so-called "Bell's inequality", in support of Bohr's view in his discussions with Einstein. Since then, Alain Aspect has been among the pioneers in the fields of atom optics and quantum information.
