While the gunman’s identity remains unknown, the police spokesman did say he’s a 26-year-old black man from Rutherford County. He has no known relationship to the church.
Police began receiving 911 calls around 11.15am where people reported that shots were fired inside Burnett Chapel Church of Christ, which is located about 30 minutes southeast of Nashville in Antioch.
A 911 dispatcher said the scene was still active as of 11.40am.
Joseph Pleasant, a spokesman for the Nashville fire department, told The Tennessean at least six to eight people have been injured and were being transported to Vanderbilt Medical Center.
Pleasant did not know the severity of the injuries.
Nashville police told Fox News one person was taken into custody.
The church hosts weekly service at 10am and is located on Pin Hook Road.
Authorities are advising for residents to stay away from Pin Hook Road.
